About South Australia Driver Knowledge Test

Getting a driving licence in South Australia is a long and strict procedure. A driver’s knowledge test (DKT) is the first and foremost crucial step to obtaining a driver’s licence in South Australia. To get a learner’s permit, you must pass a theory test, also known as DKT (driver knowledge test).

If you are 16, you can take this test and pass to get a learner’s permit which is valid for 2 years. The DKT practice test consists of 50 questions with two sections and requires you to pass with an 80% score. Practice learners test South Australia mock tests on our platform for better results.

SA Learners Licence Test Pass Score

The SA driver’s knowledge test consists of 50 questions, out of which 40 must be answered correctly.

  • Part A – Give Way Diagrams (this/that type): 8/8 must be answered correctly to pass.
  • Part B – Road Rules and Safety (multiple choice type): 32/42 must be answered correctly to pass.

What After You Pass?

Once you pass, you will get a learner’s permit, which you must hold for at least 12 months.

  • Complete 75 Hours of Driving: You must finish 75 hours of driving (out of which 15 hours must be driving at night) under the supervision of a qualified driver.
  • VORT Road Test: Record this in the logbook, and after holding the learner’s permit for 12 months, take either the VORT road test or the Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) course.
  • Hazard Perception Test for P1: Then, pass the hazard perception test to successfully get your P1.
  • P2 Licence: The P1 licence will be upgraded to a P2 level licence after 1 year.
  • Permanent Licence: Again, P2 should be held for 2 years to upgrade to a permanent driver’s licence.
  • Motorcycles: There are two types in this category: RE and R. RE provides licenses to drive electric motors and motorcycles with or without a trailer. An R license allows you to drive a motorcycle with an unlimited engine size.

What If You Fail?

If you happen to fail the theory test, do not worry. Register and pay the fee for the test once again and you can retake the test the very next day. But, if you fail the practical driving test, you must wait for about 2 weeks (13 days, to be precise) and then retake the test.

To avoid failing the test, you can prepare thoroughly by taking our practice tests, thus increasing your chances of passing the driver knowledge test. All our tests are designed to provide familiarity with the test questions and how to deal with them.
